It’s hard to argue the advantages of a well done blog interview. The best interviews are a win-win for everyone involved. Readers get a new voice/perspective to learn from, the blogger gets a fresh piece of content, and the person being interviewed gets exposed to a new audience. With all this being said one would assume that landing a blog interview would be much easier than it most of the time tends to be.
Here are 7 tips to help increase your chances:
1. Sharpen your pitch
Nothing hurts your odds of landing an interview worse than a misaligned pitch. If you’re blogging about public relations make sure the interview pitch has some type of public relations spin to it. Only reach out to people who are relevant to the topics your blog covers.
2. State the benefit upfront
Why should this person do an interview with you? What’s in it for them? A good place to start is to state what type of readers you have and the size of your audience.
3. Know that timing is everything
Not only do you need to know who to ask for the interview, but the “when” is equally as important. If the person is getting ready to launch a new website, publish a book, or release a product or a big piece of news, you may have a higher chance of grabbing the interview. If you don’t succeed initially try again at another time.
4. Have a well-defined topic
It’s quite easy to go off on a tangent and ask a wide variety of questions, but the more narrow your approach the more appreciative your readers will be.
5. Provide a time frame
How long will it take for the interview to get published? How soon do you expect to get answers back? Answering these questions up front makes the process easier for both sides.
6. Ask real questions
Don’t be afraid to ask questions with weight behind them. Cliché interviews are a dime a dozen. What are you going to do to stand out? Put yourself in your reader’s shoes. What do they want out of the interview? If the answers are obvious or assumed it simply means you’re not asking the right questions.
7. Always be courteous
Last but not least, always be respectful of the interviewee’s time and insights. Only ask questions that are appropriate for the discussion and afterwards work hard to actively promote the interview. Consider it a way of saying thanks.
