Facebook vs Google Advertising

Can Facebook advertising be more effective then Google advertising? A recent article published on CNNMoney.com found an example of one company whose data suggests so. The company, Acurian, reported that a Facebook ad would get somewhere between 2 to 5 times the return in comparison to a Google ad. Before assigning X amount of dollars to your next Google or Facebook ad it’s a good idea to look at all your options.

Advantages to Facebook:

As I reported earlier this month, creating a Facebook ad is relatively simple. One of the huge advantages to a Facebook ad is that you can quickly narrow in on your target customer. Choose the age range, language spoken, likes and interests, education, and workplace if needed.


A Google ad can only target keywords and location.

The Size of Google

Google is LARGE. It receives a lot of traffic and its size can be an advantage or disadvantage. I recently observed a friend run a Facebook ad and his results weren’t favorable. He decided to use the PPC (Pay Per Click) method and was only able to spend about 5% of his allocated advertising budget. At the end of the campaign he realized that he his targeted demographic wasn’t large enough. Not enough people were seeing his ad and thus he wasn’t get many clicks. Right now Google is the most visited website on the internet. Facebook is also still commonly believed to be behind Google in quality of analytics provided.


It’s a good idea to try both a Google and Facebook ad campaign if possible. A couple questions to keep in mind:

  • What is my target audience?
  • Is my ad more of a visual ad or a text based ad?
  • What is my click through to impressions ratio look like?
  • What does the competition look like on Google?
